On 4 and 11 May, the Soviet film Gekruisigd Eiland (1968) will be shown in the village hall De Waldhoorn. This film tells a fictionalised, Georgian interpretation of the Uprising on Texel in April and May 1945. In the film, the island of Texel was filmed in the Baltic States, which sometimes gives it a strange appearance for Texel residents. The film, made by a well-known Georgian director of that time, had to powerfully portray the Georgian motivation for the uprising, possibly rehabilitation in the Soviet Union. In this way, the uprising in Georgia also became a national heroic story. Parks, streets and a restaurant in Georgia are still named after Texel. The film is dedicated to commemorating the Georgian fallen and their eternal bond with the island of Texel. The help that Georgians received from Texel residents and the suffering that the uprising brought to Texel residents are also discussed in the film, although some scenes seem far removed from historical reality. The film will be introduced by documentary maker Arnold van Bruggen.
