The Texel Aviation & War Museum focuses on the history of aviation and the consequences of the Second World War for Texel. Fascinating topics, about which there is much more to say than you would initially think.
Texel has a close bond with aviation. The history of Texel International Airport goes back to 1937, when De Vlijt airport was opened in the Eierland polder. And as early as 1917 there was a naval air base for seaplanes on the southern tip of Texel.
The exhibition about the period 1940-1945 is impressive. The Russian War, the dramatic uprising of Georgian soldiers in German military service, plays a central role in this. This turned Texel into 'Europe's last battlefield' in April 1945. Extensive attention is also paid to the Atlantic Wall and the air war over Texel.
