In the documentary, the causes and course of 'The Russian War' are reconstructed on the basis of Dutch and Georgian eyewitnesses.
On the night of April 5 to 6, 1945, Georgian soldiers who were part of the German Wehrmacht revolted on Texel against the Germans, who were losing at the time.
This uprising ended on May 20 when the Canadian army arrived on Texel, more than two weeks after the end of the war in the Netherlands. Hundreds of people were killed among the Georgian rebels, German soldiers and the Texel civilian population.
In the film, the interviews, in which the anger and pain of the usually down-to-earth islanders emerge, are alternated with images of the island of Texel, a peaceful place where this almost forgotten tragedy once took place. More information at www.derussenvlucht.nl
